Sharps Awareness

The potential for sharps injuries are not just limited to the health care professions. Waste disposal workers, ground maintenance staff, and even individuals may suffer a sharps injury from inappropriately discarded sharps such as hypodermic needles.

By attending this course, you gain an understanding of what ‘Sharps’ are, look at primary and secondary risks from sharps and employer responsibility to ensure risk assessments are in place to ensure the safety of everyone. You’ll learn about Hepatitis B & C, HIV and Tetanus, and the probability of picking up a infection from a needle stick injury and the factors that can affect this. We’ll also examine safe handling of sharps and tools and equipment designed to minimise the risk of injury and how they work, as well correct disposable glove removal procedure and hand washing techniques. Finally, we’ll cover how to report discarded sharps, and the procedure to follow if you’re unlucky enough to pick up a sharps injury.
